The reputation of El Medano as a laid-back town, frequented by surfing/windsurfing dudes, belies the fact that the town also features what must be one of the few true rock music venues found on the island.

The Underground Rock Pub is a late evening to late night venue that specialises in loud rock music and liberal supplies of alcohol.

The word "underground" may suggest subversive or alternative, but no. Its name simply derives from the London Underground train service! Indeed, the pub's logo is adapted from the famous one that this transport facility uses.

You enter via a nondescript door in a pedestrianised side street and descend a narrow flight of stairs into the pub's room.

It is a long tube shape, again in keeping with the London Underground theme. Because it's below street level, there are no windows and you really feel like you're in a cellar. I suspect that it's a bit similar to the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool, where the Beatles played in their early days.

The norm is for very loud rock music to be blasting out from the pub's PA system. There's no food on offer - the idea is to get a few drinks down you, while headbanging along to the music.

Expect to hear all the rock classics from any and every heavy rock band you can think of.

All very well, you may be thinking, but this is supposed to be about live music.

Well, fear not.

At one end of the tube is a stage. It is here that, every Friday, a live band plays.

I mean fully live, too. Drums, guitars and vocalists - they provide a set guaranteed to give your eardrums a bashing.

I understand that the band "Island Fusion" appears regularly and they have a remarkable range of different cover versions in their repertoire.

So, if you want a venue that delivers what it promises - it's underground and it's a rock bar - give it a try.

To find this pub, get yourself to the large open plaza in the centre of town. Facing the sea, go down the small flight of steps to your left and up the pedestrianised street there. The pub (with its familar logo over the door) is just along there, on the right.
