sal negra tenerife
Tenerife is liberally sprinkled with small tapas bars and you can usually eat well quite cheaply. However, if you are prepared to spend a little extra on your tapas, then visit the charming Sal Negra, in the San Telmo area of Los Cristianos. It definitely is a cut above the rest.
With a name meaning "black salt", its picturesque interior can be accessed from the street (Avenida de La Habana), but then you can go through to a beautifully rustic open terrace, overlooking the magnificent Las Vistas beach.
What an ideal location to enjoy some food and a drink!
You will be welcomed by friendly, attentive staff and find an overwhelming array of tapas to chose from.
Being near the sea, there is a profusion of fresh seafood on offer, including squid, sardine, cod, shrimp, mussels and clams. Meat dishes are not left out, however, with tapas of chicken, pork and beef, also available as pinchos (kebabs).
Regarding drinks, there is an extensive choice of wines - in fact the bar contains a "wine shop"!
One nice feature that I understand the bar offers is, whenever you order a glass of wine, it arrives accompanied by a tapa offered by the bar. Whether that means the tapa is complimentary, I'm not sure.
If you're familiar with genuine tapas, you'll know that they really are small snacks. Here at Sal Negra, however, be prepared for rather more generous portions. Three tapas will be more than enough to share between two people.

As this bar is very popular with locals, it is a good idea to make a reservation in advance.

A charming tapas bar, a cut above the rest.
To get to the San Telmo area, start at the church square in the middle of Los Cristianos. Walk up the road to the right of the church then turn left on the road passing behind it. Keep going along there until it opens out onto a large roundabout area. You need to get to the opposite side of this, watching out for the "Slowboat" Chinese restaurant, which is at the end of the San Telmo strip of bars. Walk down along this strip and you'll eventually come to Sal Negra.
