Puerto Santiago, or Puerto de Santiago, is a quiet village, part of the trio that includes Playa de La Arena and Los Gigantes itself, on the southwest coast of the island.
Unlike some of the brash tourist resorts (you know the one I'm thinking about in particular), this is quite quiet and laid-back, being perhaps suited to the more mature holidaymaker.
So, in all honesty, you'll not find that much in the way of nightlife. However, those bars that do offer live entertainment make up for this in the standard and quality of the acts.
Regarded by some as the best bar in the area is Route 66. It is purely a drinking and live entertainment venue, with the accent on giving the customer a friendly welcome and a darn good night out.
The place opens around 5:30pm, when it is possible to sit and enjoy a quiet drink, before the mayhem of the evening kicks off.
Staff make sure all visitors are made extremely welcome and it pays off, as people return night after night and even strike up an enduring friendship with the bar.
Onto the nighttime and, come 9:30pm, the entertainment gets underway.
Route 66 is fortunate to have, as long-time resident musicians, the formidable "Old Dogs New Tricks".
They come in two formats - ODNT the duo and ODNT the band. The duo consists of Bob, on guitar and vocals and Jill, on lead vocals. Jill is classically trained and both worked at prestigious venues in the UK before relocating to Tenerife.
Two nights a week, the duo becomes a "band", with the addition of Graham on drums.
Old Dogs New Tricks perform till midnight Sundays through to Thursdays. They have an unbelievably extensive repertoire of around 250 songs, from every decade from the 50s to the present. They guarantee that the night will rock and it is usually standing room only when they appear.
Although the live music ends (by law) at midnight, the bar remains open as long as there are people in it, which, sometimes, makes for some very late nights.
To find the bar, you need to get onto the one-way road that circles Puerto Santiago. Watch out for the large hotel Barcelo Santiago, on the right. Just before that, on the left, you'll see Route 66.
