|The Orquesta Clasica |
Such works, in the past, have included Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", Bernstein's "West Side Story" and, even Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music"! In keeping with the informality of the concerts, such lighthearted melodies as the waltzes of Strauss and Offenbach's "Can Can" are also included.
This intentional lack of seriousness doesn't extend to the attitude of the orchestra members to their playing. They are all top-flight musicians and are guaranteed to give a five-star performance.
Since 2009, the orchestra has performed a New Year's concert (usually January the 2nd) at the Cultural Centre in Los Cristianos. They are often joined for this by another artistic group, which may be dancers, or a choir. These concerts are very popular and are always sold out.
If you want a concert of music that is extremely easy on the ear, this is for you!
The Musical Director
Presiding over the orchestra is conductor Colin Price.
With a musical career started at the prestigious Royal Manchester College of Music, he studied conducting with celebrated baton wielder, Sir John Barbarolli, once the guiding light of Manchester's world famous Hallé Orchestra.
From there, he enjoyed a stint with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, after which he was principal conductor of the Scottish Concert Orchestra and England's Leopold Orchestra.
However, he has now swapped the, let's say, harsh climate of Scotland for the far more temperate one of Tenerife. As a resident, he has continued his conducting legacy with this band of excellent musicians and his, and their, success goes from strength to strength.
