This is an exceptionally fine restaurant situated in a desirable area of Puerto de La Cruz.

Established for a good many years, its running is masterminded by charismatic chef, Felipe Escamilla Quintana. Felipe hails originally from the town of Manresa, right in the centre of the autonomous community of Catalonia, north-east Spain.

Proud of his Catalonian birthright, he has taken the name "El Payes" (Payes being the way Catalonia is often referred to), meaning something like "Catalonian peasant". Thus, on the side of the restaurant, you'll see the name Felipe El Payes, as well as its actual name.

As head of this successful enterprise, Felipe, let's say, doesn't suffer fools gladly. He rules with a firm hand and the result is that everything in the restaurant runs like clockwork.

I was surprised how many reviews given on various forums remarked on the professionalism and efficiency of the staff.

The restaurant itself is very nicely appointed indeed. Light and airy, with pristine table settings and comfortable seating, you'll feel, as you enter, that you are about to experience something special.

There is also a small outside terrace, for alfresco dining.

Needless to say, the cuisine of this excellent eatery is mostly Catalonian, but incorporates Canarian and international dishes, too.

Dishes are presented to gourmet standard.

Samples from the menu include cannelloni stuffed with rabbit in salmorejo sauce, carpacio of salmon and hake with caviar and palm heart and monkfish in orange sauce.

During lunch time opening, there are very reasonably priced meal deals, where you can choose a starter, main and dessert from a limited choice.

Magnolia is situated on Avenida Marques de Villanueva del Prado. This can be accessed from the TF-5 north motorway as follows:

Exit at junction 32 (signed Puerto Cruz/Martianez/El Rincon). If from the east, take the first exit from the roundabout at the end of the slip road. From the west, follow the sign for TF-31.

Stay on this a while, watching out for Puerto De La Cruz in big letters on the side of the road. Fork right at this point, follow the road round, which will take you over the one you've just left. Turn right at the junction.

You're now on the TF-312. This road will soon take you past the Botanical Gardens on the right, the Hotel Botanico on the left, then a row of shops, bars and restaurants on the right.
