Los Frailes Campsite Tenerife - a small area in the north

Tenerife's campsites vary considerably in size and number of amenities, but, no matter how small, they are all stipulated as legal areas for indulging in this outdoor activity.

One such tiny campsite is Los Frailes, adjascent to the Monte de Los Frailes national park, in the Arafo area, in the north of the island.

Covering an area of only 2,000 square metres, it can accommodate no more than 10 tents.

As befits its modest size, amenities are very limited, with running water, toilets and parking. Don't expect to find such luxuries as showers or barbecue areas - although there are sets of benches and tables where you can sit and eat any meals you've cooked on your own little stove.

Perhaps inevitably, there is the "recreation area", which, as usual, is open until 7pm in winter and 9pm in summer.

There is no public transport taking you to this site, but here's how to access it by car.

You need to start off from the village of Arafo, which can be accessed from the TF-1 motorway. Exit at junction 20, taking the TF-281 road, signed La Hidalga/Arafo. Eventually, you'll reach a t-junction with TF-28, where you should turn left. Immediately after, take the right fork, signed TF-245. This will take you all the way to Arafo, where you come to the TF-525. Turn right onto this and, after around six kilometres, watch out for a sign on the left, saying "Zona Recreativa" and "Monte Los Frailes". Turn down this and you'll come to the campsite.
