When you enter this sophisticated restaurant, you are confronted with an overwhelming profusion of...wine! There are racks of wine bottles lining the walls, plus a good supply of full-sized wine barrels.
It's almost as if the tables and the dining part of the establishment were installed as an afterthought.
This is not so far from the truth, as the venue was, in the first instance, a wine cellar. As a restaurant, therefore, the accent in its service is very much on the grape, with an excellent variety of choice.
That is not to say that the food is not of superior quality, too.
The restaurant is situated in the heart of Santa Cruz, not far from the large open area that houses the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de Africa and has a stylish exterior. Once inside, you are confronted with an equally smart interior, with certain rustic touches.
Regarding the type of cuisine, this venue favours the so-called "market food", which means, I suppose, that it is based on fresh, local produce. Dishes are traditionally Spanish and consist of such things as foie in wine sauce, or steak in a raspberry coulis.
But, back to the wine! As befits its history, La Bodega employs a master sommelier in the shape of Albert Amat, who perfected his craft over many years in his native Catalonia. He expertly looks after the Bodega's wine cellar and will happily advise you on the appropriate vintage for your meal.
Should you not be hungry enough for a full-blown meal, the venue also houses a tapas bar, offering a bewildering array of these ubiquitous Spanish delicacies.
All in all, a fine place to partake of superb food and drink.

To find this restaurant, begin from the area where the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de Africa is (with its landmark clock tower). Set off down the road second to the right of the market (there's a branch of Santander Bank on the corner). You'll soon come to the venue, on your left.
