bodegon matias la orotava
When husband and wife, Victoria and Matias, began this restaurant back in 1957, they had a feeling that it was going to be a long term venture. How right they were!
They created the restaurant with the accent on three basic things: good treatment of customers, flavors that recall childhood memories and a selection of good, earthy wine.
After 34 years of hard work the successful running of the restaurant was finally handed over to their daughter, Fabiola, who was already a major force in the business. From 1991, Fabiola and her husband Jose Antonio have run the Bodegon to a superb standard, delivering tempting, delicious food that draws both regular local customers and thousands of other visitors.
From quite a modest, unassuming exterior, you enter to find a charmingly rustic environment, with oak wine barrels in profusion and walls absolutely crammed with an eclectic collection of old tools used by traditional artisans. There is still even an old-style cash register, for reckoning up your bill!
The restaurant is made up of two rooms. The larger one will accommodate up to 70 diners and is non-smoking. Smoking is allowed in the smaller room, which seats 25.
Dishes on offer include all the traditional Canarian classis, such as rabbit, fried or in salmorejo sauce, revueltos, montaditos of sweet potato and cod - and a rather spectacular looking starter, four pieces of cheese on toast, each spread with a different sauce - red and green mojo, quince and sweet orange.
You will also find a comprehensive selection of desserts, including gofio mousse, bienmesabe, tiramisu and crema catalana. There is an excellent selection of Spanish and Canarian wines on offer, plus the Bodegon's own selection, from its winery, which are of equally fine quality.
La Despensa
Meaning "The Pantry" in English, this consists of an outside catering service. They will organize everything for you in your own home, or anywhere else that you want with a set of their dishes cooked for you, with a tasteful table setting, including a floral decoration. You can choose to have a waiter, the cook or only the food. They can provide for any number from small groups to 120 people.
If you're looking for a venue for a big celebration, the restaurant is in collaboration with the fincas Villa Calle, in La Orotava and Pura Vida, in La Matanza.
