Rip Off Tenerife Not Going Back
by: Anonymous

Don't think that I shall be returning to Tenerife as I was used in this scam to buy a tablet, on the beach. They are from India so they say, ripping people off. Beware. Not had money back from the bank. It's a tobacco shop on the front in Los Cristianos. Yes, they wiped us out no money left in account. How long will it take for them to get caught? All that money they have taken off holiday makers. Disgusting people.

Was it Peuquera Canina Las Palmas or Orlando Juan Perez Los Palmas both in Gran Canaria? That is where the money went from our banks. I also informed ActionFraud Police in UK. The more of us that do this the more likely they will be caught.
I am also going to write to Tenerife Government.

Dodgy Shops
by: Lynn

My gullible husband bought a video camera from a dodgy shop on the beachfront. I thought he'd lost his mind. They then started the same nonsense - adding things on and wanting his card details. My husband finally came to his senses and demanded a refund which they refused. I went mad shouting & screaming at them. They flung me out of the shop and told my husband to control his wife lol. I stood outside shouting and telling everyone not to shop there I told them I would stay there all day so they finally gave my husband his money back. Will never buy electronic goods abroad.

Costa Adeje Scam
by: Anonymous

We went to Costa Adeje, Tenerife last year for a month in June. I was dragged into a shop on the beach front right in front of the hotel Bahia Princess - come out back of hotel down steps to beach road, shop was first on the left - yellow blinds. They do excursions, one half electrical and clothing in the other. I bought a tablet, cash. Was asked how long I was staying for and was told to bring the tablet back into the shop on my last day and they would set it all up for me. Free insurance, all free channels. I went back like a fool. They asked me if I had brought my passport and credit card with me. I said no. They told me I needed to go and get them because they had to set up a direct line between my bank and the shop insurance in case anything went wrong. I would be able to make a direct claim directly into my bank account. They also photocopied my passport for security reasons. Needless to say, when we got home I went to my bank just on a hunch I had been scammed and, lo and behold, I had almost a thousand pounds taken from my account. The company logo on my balance sheet went to Disney World company. Look out for that shop, can't miss it, all done out in yellow, foot of stairs in front of Bahia Princess. Beware! We will never go back to Tenerife again.

Rich World Scam
by: Anonymous

Asked the price of a Samsung tablet whilst purchasing a couple of sleeves of cigarettes, what a mistake! Sales person gives me a really low price a hell of a lot less than I paid for my own. My husband says at that price I'm interested. That's when it starts. Please come to the back of the shop so we can sort your warranty. The reason they are so cheap is because they need unlocking for not much more you can upgrade. He's still got a Samsung in his hand so we agree. Then he recommends a glass screen protector and a leather cover which he whips pieces of old Argos magazine to prove the full price. No thank you by now is not working. Give me your credit card and you will be fully covered. No credit card on us, thankfully. He has £200 cash though. If you leave it with us we will have the screen protector fitted. Pick it up Tuesday before you leave. The Samsung is still on the desk when we leave. Go to pick it up and now he wants to fix us up with MacAfee and free Sky package. I have MacAfee and tell him I got mine free. Ah, he says but not with Sky package then mentions Mobdro. That's not a Sky package we chorus! This is MacAfee for 10 years and on and on. Finally get out of the shop after he switches it on to prove it works. He starts putting everything in a bag and we want to run. Still believing we have a Samsung with a few additions and for still less than mine we leave. Back at the hotel we get it out to try it, connect to wifi etc. Oh dear it's NOT A SAMSUNG. The glass screen protector is PLASTIC one of those you can get anywhere. The MacAfee code that was to be sent to us not arrived. We're Idiots nowhere on our paperwork is the name Samsung or much else for that matter. If this is Tenerife it will be a long long time before it sees me or mine again

Just returned from Costa Adeje and unfortunately victim of scam. Bought a tablet supposedly Google, showed us an Argos book that stated it was £750 in the UK. Supposed to have a 10 hour battery life - actually 1 hour. Approached first by front man Ali Baba (not joke name). Passed us onto Richie (technician) who had a gold coloured BMW. Got it changed to English with a promise of virus protection. Went back next day and met another Indian, Tony Amareto and, surprise surprise, memory wasn't big enough to install the anti-virus. Their boss came then (didn't get his name). He took copy of passport to register with Google (ha) and charged us 2000 euros for a memory card. Went for lunch came back. Cost us £1400 (something called iplay as payee) plus 200 euros for the tablet. The address on the slip/receipt is TAB STORE.C.C.PLAYA LOCAL 1 SAN EUGENIO BAJO ADEJE TENERIFE. The phone number given to us doesn't exist. These crooks need to be stopped. We will never go to Tenerife again. It has destroyed or faith in this island.

Adeje Scam
by: Alan

I was also scammed at Ocean Department Stores on Adeje promenade in September. Bought a tablet at a price which seemed too good to be true. Price started at 20 euros for a small one, was then persuaded to upgrade to 159 euros at which point I stopped going higher which didn't please the "technical man" at all. I had already paid the 159 by credit card and am currently trying to reclaim from my bank. Later in the week I was approached by another store with exactly the same "offer". I was also taken to the rear of the shop, asked if I would like a drink etc.and then the hard sell began. Luckily I got out of it before more monies were lost.
It is time the police were involved in this scam.

Electrical Shop
by: Angry Man

Warning for holidaymakers going to Tenerife!!

We almost got ripped off on Saturday by Asian men who own the electrical shop in the shopping centre opposite the Hard Rock Cafe, on Avenue Las Americas.

It’s the same con as others have described i.e. at first they tried to sell us a tablet at a good price but then they said it needed a few upgrades which sent the price soaring.

They were trying to charge us €1800.

Thankfully there was a problem with our credit card and it was declined so the money never went through.

When we got back to our hotel we phoned our credit card company to make sure we hadn’t been charged.

If you’re near the shopping centre opposite the Hard Rock, don’t go into the electrical shop. You’ve been warned!!

Scam in Las Americas MATTA RANI shop
by: Anonymous

Avoid this shop they are con men.
My wife and I were in Las Americas when we saw a tablet which was fairly priced. We went into a small Electrical Shop called MATTA RANI. When paying for the tablet the sales clerk asked my wife if she’d be interested in buying a Google 9.7 inch tablet for 29 euros. She thought it was a good deal and before she knew it the price was 97 euros, something about a guarantee. He said we would have to come back later that day, preferred evening and he would take us to his other store to have it changed into English, and also to get a tax free receipt for customs when we left next day. They also talked us into getting a Google package for the tablet. When we paid for this and asked for a receipt they said we would get the receipts sent to us after they had contacted Google.
Not knowing any better and being extremely tired by this time (we are both in our eighties), we went ahead and paid the full amount. Went back to the UK next day. When we received our credit card statement, they had taken 2600 pounds from the account. We never did get the receipts from them or Google. We are having trouble with the bank in getting a refund as we had no receipts.
They seem to prey on older people who don’t have much knowledge of electronics.

Scam merchants in Los Cristianos

Hi

I’m wondering if you can help?
We have got ourselves into a terrible situation!

We went into a small Electrical Shop on Los Cristianos beachfront. When paying for the tablet the sales guy Roger asked if we’d be interested in buying a Google 9.7 inch new satellite tablet for 189 euros. He said we would have to come back the day before we fly home, and he would take us to his office to have it set up in English, add anti-virus and also to get a tax free receipt for customs when we left next day. They also talked us into getting a Google package for the tablet. When we paid for this and asked for a receipt they said we would get the receipts sent to us directly by Google.q
Not knowing any better and feeling a bit worn down by this time we went ahead and paid the full amount, as we could get rid of our Sky TV and broadband. Went returned UK today. When we checked our bank statement, they had taken 4700 pounds from the account. I doubt we’ll receive any receipts from them or Google. We are having trouble with the bank in getting a refund as we had no receipts.
Can anyone help us get some of this money back?
This has ruined our holiday and I doubt we will ever return to Tenerife again after this!

Many Thanks

I had a bad experience in the shop today. I was duped and foolishly paid cash for a tablet and was told to go back today for the tax form to be completed. I realised that the tablet wasn’t actually what I thought. They asked for passport ID and personal email and credit card. I became suspicious and asked for my money back as the tablet wasn’t what I needed.
The man (don’t know his name) was very belligerent. He wouldn’t listen to me and told me to shut up or throw me out of his shop as I was disturbing other customers. Finally, I got a refund but was very worried that he may have finished the process to get funds from my credit card. I stopped the credit card as soon as I could get through to the bank so hopefully no damage done in that way. The whole experience left me very shaken.

It looks like we are victims of this scam too.
We were told to go back to get tax forms the day as we were leaving.
Tuesday 2nd November they said that Google needed £3,000 each device as a guarantee. We had bought two devices, then in 72 hours it would be back into our accounts.
We stupidly did this as we were in a rush to get back to our hotel to check out and get the shuttle to the airport so I was not in my right frame of mind.
My husband has been in the bank twice. They gave him a fraud contact number which he rang yesterday they said wait the 72 hours from when our money was taken out of the account by cards. After reading all the scams on this site I will be ringing the other number the fraud team gave us yesterday, in the morning and see if we can start trying to get some of our money back. All this to sweeten us up & all along they are scamming us. They scammed us out of £1,600. There was a Jack but not sure of other names, probably made up names because they didn't sound Asian. Reading all these comments is sickening as my partner and I have been victims too just recently. We went into a little shop on the beach walkway in Los Cristianos just to buy a towel and a guy called Nicholas persuaded us to buy a little iPad and then added in the keyboard. It was about 120 euros. It followed the same pattern as everyone else... until the day before we were due to come home we were told to call in and get anti virus added. This then involved being driven to the One Stop Shop where we were sucked into signing up for a contract to install satellite on the device. They talk so fast with so much info that you get bewildered and don’t know how to get out of it. We ended up paying about 4 thousand pounds for this, the majority on my credit card and the rest on my partner’s debit card. When our banks sent text messages querying this amount the scammers took our phones and pushed the yes button. Fortunately my partner’s bank still stopped the transaction . We stopped our bank cards before we left Tenerife. I am working with M and S bank to try and get my money back. It is worrying that they also scanned our driving licences and my passport. How easy it is to be sucked in and how stupid we feel. Brits in Tenerife should be made more aware of what is going on.

Realised Been Scammed...?
by: Susan K

Only went into the shop to buy a salt and pepper pot. Was offered a Samsung at 45 euro, ended up paying an extra 188 euros for a Google device which I haven’t tried yet. Showed me an Argos catalogue as above comments. Made me an appointment to go back on Wednesday to have satellite installed. Foolishly gave him my phone number and home address for the guarantee. He sent me his phone number +34 612200488 and said his name was Gavin (although he was Indian). He doubled bagged my item claiming others would be jealous if they saw what a bargain I had got. I bought what looks like a Google tablet. If it’s not what I want will be going back with my husband on Wednesday with no cards and no money to ask for my money back. I have cancelled my card with the bank and it is marked as stolen so no more transactions can be made. Does anyone know if the tablets they sell are actually any good?

Retraction and Apology
by: Susan Kelly

Update to my post above......
I went back to the shop to say I wasn’t happy with my purchase and Gavin refunded all of my money.
I overreacted because I was frightened having read some of the horror stories on this thread and assumed I had been scammed when I hadn’t been at all. In retrospect I should have gone to the shop first and not posted slanderous comments on the Internet. I am sorry for any damage I may have caused to the shop's reputation and to Gavin and his colleagues in the shop who could not have been more accommodating when I returned. I told Gavin I would set the record straight. This is a full retraction of my previous post.

Foto World in Los Cristianos beside the Ale Hop. Went in for a phone cover and ended up with an iPad not worth the money paid a phone which was not what was told it was and some package for iPad we could use for thousands if channels. It was all a scam, the worst thing was my husband was paying with Revolut and while the guy Ray was sorting his phone out he went into my husband's Revolut and sent himself money. This guy is an absolute slicker he is years doing this and has no morals. Do not buy anything in this shop, the father owns the shop and pretends to know nothing about tech stuff and rings the son to come help you. Ray is not his name - a different name came up on the Revolut. We have been going to Tenerife for many years and love the island but this was enough to stop us ever going back. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THE SHOPS IN TENERIFE THEY ARE ALL SCAMMERS.

Spanish Police Please Arrest These Men!

Kris the owner has several shops in Puerto Colon in Costa Adeje. Keep out of them all!! His main scamming shop is the one on the corner next to the Ale Hop shop, to the left of the cows!! Kris, his son and the "tech guy", all Asian men, will very politely rip you off for thousands of pounds. Offers of reduced price tablets and then up-selling the product. Picking up the item on your last day after they have "uploaded" everything. They'll run an amount through their card machine saying it's for a credit check, and by the time the wheels on your plane have touched down on British tarmac all your hard earned cash has gone and your holiday is ruined.

Has anyone managed to get a refund from their banks?

Has anyone managed to get the police involved?

They must have been doing this fraud for a long time as they are word perfect in the scam and have answers for every question and are doing it on a regular basis so why have the authorities in Tenerife not been involved?

These characters must be stopped from ripping off British tourists.

Just returned from Tenerife and guess what? We were done good and proper! After reading all the comments I realised that it’s exactly what happened to us!
I was lucky my bank Santander stopped the transactions but the Asian snatched my phone when he heard the phone message come through and before I knew it in seconds he had pressed YES to accept the transaction! But my bank still stopped it.
My friend wasn’t so lucky and lost about £6,000 and because he allowed the transaction to go through he has lost it all.
I have reported this to the BBC show RIP OFF BRITAIN. Why don’t you all do the same and maybe they will investigate it?

Your friend shouldn’t lose his money. If any goods or services he received were not as described then he has been scammed.

Any bank which receives money as a result of an illegal activity is guilty of money laundering which is offence worldwide.

Fill in all the bank claw back forms and give them a detailed statement on how you were scammed. Persist in your claim, the bank knows where the money went. This applies to credit cards and debit cards.

It worked for me.

Me Too
by: Anonymous

My wife and I had a nice holiday in Costa Adeje last week until being scammed with computer tablets similar to the stories above. We bought a tablet each with cash and then on the last day hours before our flight was due they said they needed to put antivirus on the tablets. Unfortunately I left my wife on her own while I went back to the hotel to pack ready for coach pickup to airport. They said they would drop my wife off at the hotel which they did but after asking for a first payment of £24 on her debit card. It turned out they had taken £1700. They had also copied my wife's passport and my driving license. I checked her online account while at the airport approx 1 hour later and found a payment of £1700.23 pending. We rang TSB fraud department and reported it and asked for the payment to be stopped. They said they could not stop it and could not do anything until it had cleared the account (we still can't understand this). We have to try and resolve with shop (no receipt) for next 14 days before we can submit a dispute form to try and get our money back. We flew with Jet2 and I've recommended they warn all their customers about these scams throughput the Canary Islands. However it appears that nobody is interested it bringing justice to these scum bags. Good luck everyone keep fighting for justice. By the way our scammers were in a small seafront shop close to Villamor hotel. It had Ferrari on side of canvas next to cafe.

What we can't understand is why these scum bags are still getting away with this. I also think the Police are involved in the scams else something would have been done about it before now. I have informed the lady we rented our apartment off and asked her to put a notice in the apartment warning people not to buy phones, cameras or tablets from any of these Asian shops. They are all in it together. The main guy told us his Father owned countless shops, no doubt all bought from scamming people. The more people that are made aware of these scams, the better. If only we had known we wouldn't have fallen for their patter. I would suggest every hotel and apartment rented out warns people of these evil Asians who are operating.

PLEASE READ THIS
by: J. Miguel Curbelo

In order to help ourselves to protect against those professional scammers try please to leave some data in your post, like:

Location with street address, name of the shop, name or alias of scammers, product used as bait, total worth scammed, technique used for and if you did a formal report in police or not.

Please put in mind that when this happened and if is in a shop, you can ask for a formal complaint sheet that must have a serial number and says "Hoja de Reclamaciones" and come with copies. If in shop refusing to give to you this or the sheet seems to be fake, call the local police or 112 and ask for local police, because in shop they have to give you this sheet.

ALSO, you can go to national police station to put a report against the shop, it is free.

Maybe one or two reports don't mean an important problem for scammers but 5 or 6 yes and made the police put seriously their eyes over the scammers.

Scammers ruin not only individuals, but a complete image of an island that made many sacrifices to having an acceptable quality onto in a tourism-ready model and way of life.

Tenerife Chip & Pin Scam. Be Aware!!!!
by: Anonymous

We are another victim of these scams. Went into an Asian gift/electrical shop half way between Adeje and Las Americas on the sea front at the top of a flight of steps. Purchased a note book and they got us to go back to the shop on the day we were flying home to put some apps on and sync this note book with my phone. Then told me not to switch my phone on for seven hours while this happened or I would lose all my phone contacts and photos (gullible me). Got us to purchase insurance for the tablet using my MBNA card which, because of the slow Internet, did not go through, (but it did go through), then asked for another card, a NatWest, which went through and showing us clearly the transaction figure on the chip and pin machine. Back home next morning both cards had been used to withdraw nearly £1900 from my account.

Getting Your Money Back
by: DT

I was scammed in December for about £7000. on both my credit card and bank card. I contacted my banks as soon as I realised I had been scammed and followed their procedures. I sent both banks several pages outlining how I’d been scammed and sent copies of similar scams on these pages. Detail is important.

I have had refunds from both banks. The scammers did try another trick. I had filled in a sheet of paper with my name and contact details. They then added items they said I had purchased and said it was an invoice receipt. Legally, a receipt has to have the details of the vendor. These were missing. This they sent to the bank as to why they’d taken money from me. The bank has rejected this.

The only people who can help you are the banks. Don’t waste your time chasing help from other organisations. If the banks reject your claim, post in these pages and I will help you with a response.

Was in Costa Adeje on 22nd June. Pressured into buying a tablet which was supposed to be a Google Tablet and do everything with no need for Wi Fi . Told to come back day I was leaving and engineer would have it all set up and ready. They then told me since I was paying full amount instead of monthly I would qualify for a bigger screen (which they installed but not a Google one)and would also get the latest Samsung Mobile Phone sent to me.
Paid £1900 pounds for this and was told receipt would be sent to my email address. Given a phone number in case I had any problems setting it up when home. Got home and tablet didn’t work as it was a fake. Now in the process of trying to retrieve the money back from bank and credit card. I am a 76year old pensioner and thought I was getting a bargain.
The store was SUPREME Stores just round from Bahia Princess.

I first commented on here back in March. After numerous phone calls to different departments at my bank I have now been told they need receipts to progress with the chargeback. But I haven't got any receipts because the shop that scammed me said I would receive all paperwork and receipts in the post. As that is now 4 months down the line I don't think I will be receiving anything now. I can't continue chasing this anymore, I really don't know what to do. So I shall just say goodbye to the £1700 that this bunch of deceiving humans scammed out of me. How and why this is still going on I really don't know.

Don’t give up. You have been scammed.
Check the bank web site for their fraud procedures.
You need to write to the banks fraud department. (Not emails)
On the first page write a DETAILED description of what exactly happened. On page 2 refer to this web site and explain how what had happened to you had happened before to others. Send copies of relevant pages from the web site to back up your claim. Request a chargeback and it is then up to the retailer to prove that the transaction was genuine. You have a genuine claim. I cannot see why the bank is not being more helpful.

Scumbags Also in Arona and NatWest Renege on Refund
by: Neil M

I was similarly scammed on 8 May 2022 starting in Sun Land CC Compostela Beach Local 396-A 38660 Arona. Started by fat guy calling himself Santiago enticing me with 20% off anything for my wife while he winds me into the delights of his satellite receiving Samsung Galaxy tab for 39 euro cash. This gets wound up to Promax tab13 labelled with OLED, Sky, Octacore & Android which his tech mate tells me is latest model & will mean I don't need to buy a set of Google Cards (whatever they are) when I get home & I'll have free access to Sky & Worldwide satellite channels - all this for another 66 euros with a case as well! Got me hook line & sinker, so paid the extra on my credit card. Having copied my driving license & got my phone no & email, was told I'd need to be collected later from my hotel after necessary apps have been loaded & I would be taken to their other store where this was going to be done (it's Sunday so they said they were closing early and we were flying back next morning) and it would all be explained to me as to how to operate it all.
After a drive into Las Americas, I was taken into the back of the store & handed over to Manolo who wanted my iPhone to pair up with the Promax & both connected to satellite (at another 5 euros which had to be by card!). This took quite some time, during which I was handed over to Pedro (the younger boss) who then said I needed to take out a subscription for after the satellite trial period had expired! This was 14.80 euro a month or 1800 for lifetime. I reluctantly agreed to monthly basis to get on with it & get out, as he said the subscription was with Google for their satellite & could be cancelled at any time. He even showed me a link to satellite services on his desktop computer with the rates etc. My card was needed for a "credit check" which would be for the full amount of 1,900 euro up to the time when monthly charges would end, and this amount would show on my account for 7 days, reverting to the monthly subscription after it was credited back by Google. I then noticed that both Manolo & Pedro had me enter my PIN while they held onto the card reader with their hands over the screen, so I took my phone back, checked my online card account to see that 2,496 had been taken for the "credit check" and 2,366 instead of the 5 euro "connection fee" and to an account called Capture Playa America ESP! Manolo said the extra was for kit that Google would be sending to fix to my TV.
I immediately insisted on cancelling all transactions, told them what they could do with their tablet and insisted on full refund. Pedro reluctantly agreed, instructed that I be given 105 euros cash refund for the tab purchase to save going back to Sun Land. They rang the number on the card machine to check how long it would take to get the card amounts refunded & told me 5 days.
After this time, I contacted NatWest with all the details & copies of every bit of paper I had. They eventually said after a lot of toing & froing (including the retailer providing written receipts all in Spanish that I'd never seen before) that if I heard nothing further from them by 11 Sep, then the charges would be cancelled. Yet, on 3 Oct, they write to say the retailer still claims I have "the top" (not even the tab) and is declining the cancellation, so there's nothing more they can do for me! They suggest "citizens advice" or Trading Standards (which is no longer provided by my Council)
Anyone out there got any more sensible suggestions?

Neil M I contacted citizens advice and trading standards but they said they couldn't help. My bank couldn't help as I put my pin number in. Same as you 'a credit check' and the money would be returned.....why did I fall for it????

Credit Card Scams
by: DT

I had a similar experience with the Tesco Bank. The scam occurred in December 21 and at first I got a refund which was reversed in Aug 22. The retailer produced a ‘receipt’ for goods which they said I had purchased. I pointed out to the bank that a receipt had to have the name of the retailer and a date to make it legal but they ignored this. Crime amongst these electrical retailers is endemic in Tenerife and they are so good at what they do. Crime is more profitable than retailing.

Las Americas Tablet Scam
by: Steven Coverdale

There's a shop in Adeje / Las Américas where they try to sell you a Samsung tablet. This shop is called Love Tenerife. It's a complete scam. I was caught out 3 years ago, where they swap the tablet for one which is cheap Chinese junk. The shop next door is also doing exactly the same scam now too. I was there a week ago and saved a couple from being ripped off, just in time. The Spanish police need to shut these people down.

Same story. We were scammed by a shop in Adeje Tenerife store name on shop Tobacco Store, the shop is on Esmerelda St. They sell you an iPad then make you go back when it has been changed over to English and get you to go back the day you are leaving. Unfortunately my husband went back alone and paid on a debit card. When we got home £3417.00 had been taken from his account.
We have informed the Spanish police and our bank but we can not get our money back.
It's a shame these people spoil the country with their scams. Holiday makers are an easy target so it seems and nothing is done about it.
Be aware stay clear of these people.

Scam ! Be Aware
by: Anonymous

So a few days ago myself and my partner stopped off on two laid back wooden chairs outside a restaurant in Adeje close to The Castle restaurant.
Before we knew it, we had a tablet in our hands, this is yours for 39 euros...! We were then invited into the shop next door and so the SCAM began 😒
We sat with Monolo (large man) and together with his friend Pablo told us to upgrade to a Google Pro tablet!
At this point my partner wanted to walk away...but Monolo kept reducing the price!! Eventually we handed over another 60 euros total now 99 euros.
He then told us he needed time to add all the data to it, he asked when do you fly home..? My partner asked why? Anyway I returned on the said day of Sat 19th to be told by Monolo, you need to bring me your passport or driving licence and collect it within 12 hours of you going home!!
My partner then said "something is very wrong with this". Needless to say on investigation we found this info on here.
We were refused our 99 euros by Monolo but Pablo agreed we could have goods to the value of 99 euros from the shop.
The scam starts from the beginning and you being made to feel very special to them all.
Lots of folks have been drawn in my them obtaining all your PERSONAL details and they have the ability to access your BANK DETAILS.

Stay away! They are extremely clever at what they do.
The GOLDEN RULE - IF YOU WOULDN'T DO IT IN THE UK...DON'T DO IT ON HOLIDAY.

On Wednesday Nov 30th, the Daily Mail "Sally Sorts It" page featured the tablet scam. The Nat West Bank refused to refund a customer who had been scammed for £4200 until the newspaper got involved. At least more people have now been warned about entering electrical shops in Tenerife. However, it does seem that banks are still not being helpful to their customers.

The Scammers Have Gone
by: Scambuster

Many of you have been scammed by the gang at the Gift shop next to Al hop in Puerto Colon. I went there Wed 14th December to discover that the gift shop is now a restaurant. I’m following up leads as to where they have gone. I hope it is prison but I suspect not. These slippery customers had restaurant and property interests in the area. Hope to have more information by the end of the week.

Are All the Retailers At It?
by: Scambuster

Since Wednesday, I have been walking the streets of Costa Adeje to see which electrical retailers were selling the €39 Samsung tablet. (From Puerto Colon to the Veronicas along the coastal walkway.)

The answer is they all do.

Usually there is someone outside the store asking you where you are from and if you will come into the store they will offer you a discount. Then they whip out the tablet, plus a case and accessories for €39. In one store I was offered 10% pensioner discount. They are all pleasant Asians. However, once I’d identified as someone who had been scammed things stopped and they were sympathetic.

The tablets are old models and installed on them is worldwide television and new for this year, all national newspapers.

Is everything as it seems? I don’t know. Is it too good to be true? Yes.

What I did notice when I identified myself as someone who’d been scammed a warning seemed to go around the store in their native language. More to follow.

Where Have the Scammers Gone?
by: Scambuster

Following on from my previous comments, I spoke to two retailers. One said that the criminals from Puerto Colon were in prison. Another said one had left the country for Pakistan after scamming one customer for £100000. I was also told that they were still trading from a shop in Puerto Santiago. Reading the comments from the past year most of the scamming came from the shop in Puerto Colon which was now a restaurant.

I was not convinced. I noticed a Tobacco Shop in the corner of Puerto Colon next to the shop that had converted into a restaurant. This shop was also owned by the trader next to the Ale Hop.

I went into this shop and I noticed that there was a seated area screened off at the back of the shop. As I got closer I heard a conversation between the retailer and a Dutch couple. This seemed very familiar. { Show you the tablet in the Argos catalogue, they will guarantee it, doesn’t need a SIM, television programmes from around the world. } I was spotted and eased out of the store. We then went back to his other shop. They never give up. Tried to sell me an Apple Watch and an iPhone. Never mention that you’re only allowed gifts to the value of £290 to avoid customs duties. They’ll tell you anything to get a sale. Apparently, the 5 network will replace the 4 network next year making my iPhone useless. {they’re designed to work together for the next ten years}.

I don’t know if there are any honest traders in Tenerife. I’ll let you judge. All I can say is don’t buy electrical goods in Tenerife. If it seems too good to be true it probably is!

by: Anonymous

We got offered a tablet then said we can get a good offer on a iPad 100 euros. Told me they would update it with extras but had to buy a SIM for 19 euros on the day of leaving. Fella picked me up from the hotel at 9.45 then took me to another shop, different area. Bear in mind I had to be back at the hotel 12.30 for the coach. While I was in the back of the shop, 4 Asians were walking around. 1 was doing the iPad downloads, another told me you have to buy a SIM 19 euros. OK, he put 19 in the card reader, I put my pass in then told me it isn't working. Then said he will use the near the front of the shop, 19 euros again. Then told me he would do a receipt, he came back with a QR code, told me it will pass the customs. Fella was still working on the tablet. I told I got to get back to the hotel 12.25 just in time. Soon as we got the airport customs I rung the bank up asked them what transactions were made. 1,965 euros. Told them stop my card that was fraud. I'm still waiting for the bank to sort it out. The company name was SUNRISE. I hope this might tell you stay away from these robbing gits.

Tablet Fraude Gekoppeld aan Satelliet Abonnement
by: Bedrogen

English translation from your webmaster:

We totally recognize this scam, because it also happened to us yesterday. We stayed in Costa Adeje and walked on the 17th January 2023 on the boulevard there. I bought sunglasses and a cap in a store. Then I was offered a small tablet for 29 euros. I happened to have a small job to do that I needed the program for so I thought why not? I bought the tablet. Details Sunrise Cash and Carry Pay appliance Store. Tenerife tablet store. I was referred to a technical man in the business, who knocked the tablet down and said that I had better buy a better one because it would be of much more use to me. If I traded in the small one I could get a much better one for an extra 80 euros. But he promised even more, namely 10 years of free protection against viruses and a free google connection with satellite, so that I could see a lot of TV programs.
He pushed me to pay cash. He did give his phone number (603342337) and said that the code for the satellite only had to be entered on the day of departure. He would pick me up from our hotel. Still I thought - strange but as we had been talking about his native India (Mumbai) for quite some time which we knew quite well we had some confidence. Yesterday January 25, 2023 we were picked up by him and taken to his other business. A technician - they all come from India - took a long time to install antivirus and then he needed our ID card (driver's license) to get the tablet through customs (a beep would sound at the check). Then the big boss himself came and indicated that we could get a 10-year subscription to satellite connection for 1989 euros. We only had to make a reservation, which would expire after 3 days and if we paid the first installment of 19 euros per month, we could cancel. That seemed like the escape just in case. He arranged all kinds of things for us to make it easy for us. It was useful to get a VAT discount on Tenerife (485). Everything very clever, step by step and confusing.
Today it turned out that the entire so-called reserved amount had been collected, the promised email with all data from them and from Google had not been sent. Very stupid of me of course, but the always small steps and the so-called. arranging something for you are together a big step that you don't want. All my passes now blocked. Police and fraud desk banks informed and possibly also a new driver's license. Too bad after such a nice holiday.
Given the number of complaints, these fraudsters must be arrested immediately.

I too was taken in by his horrendous scam. Garry and his mates in Costa Adeje on Tuesday 31.1.23 and had to go back on the morning of my departure to get the tablet set up. Very stressful and almost missed my transfer coach to the Airport. They said not to worry as they would drive me to the Airport. Horrible experience and it has left a bad taste in my mouth about Tenerife which was my first visit. Loved the resort, but I wish I had said the magic word "NO" on Wednesday. Went into the above shop at the end of last week (9th March) and was talked into buying a tablet for £150 which would be loaded and ready for me the evening before I left. It wasn't ready and suddenly there was a £24.99 charge to pay monthly! Sadly, my partner put his card forward to make the payment and then they said because of his age, it would need to be shared between us! This followed with both of my cards being tried as they said the first one wasn't working! We arrived home today and they have taken almost £2000 from my partner and as he authorised it, there is nothing he can do. My bank, Santander refused the payments as they were suspicious or I too would be £2000 short! All were Asians, I caught the leaders name as Gary, and the other two we dealt with were Carlos and Raoul. Of course, I dont think that would be true but please be careful! We are almost 70 years old and it was pretty much all we had! How do they sleep at night?

Just got scammed out of £1035.24.
Got talked into buying a laptop at the back of a shop and told to come back on the day before departure for a VAT customs clearance receipt and then scammed into giving my credit card to make a payment for something else. He kept saying that it wasn’t going through and try again, then once more and he said it failed so can I pay cash €250 and like a mug I did.
Only on returning to the UK did I find the transaction had gone through?

Scammed in Adeje March 31st this year by Indian men in a shop called The Bargain. Thought I was buying a Google tablet with a Google TV HDD sat appliance at £2500. Realized too late it was a scam so reported it to my bank who took up an investigation. The Bargain refused to cancel the transaction, then offered half back then said all the money had been repaid into my account. They then produced to the bank a false bill of sale allegedly for a Sky Sat Box forging my signature which the bank have accepted thus far. Constant telephone calls from them became a nuisance so I resorted to WhatsApp only with all messages copied to my bank. Still ongoing and difficult to resolve.

To the person scammed in March, this is a copybook scam.

I too suffered from the made up receipt. Tesco Bank originally accepted that I had been scammed and gave me a refund. The ‘retailer’ then produced a false receipt for a weird collection of goods SEVEN months later and the bank gave them my money.

What I found when I visited Tenerife a year later was that the scammers had disappeared but that every gift retailer I visited was operating the tablet scam.

Don’t buy any electrical goods in the Canary Islands, even if it’s not a scam. The goods are overpriced, old stock with no guarantee and these extra features they promise don’t work once you get home.

Whilst trying to find my relative in the strip of bars below Iberostar south’s hotel, I woke up to find a bar had charged me £150 for a bottle of water! Scammed and not given a receipt. Whilst leaving a bar earlier on that evening I’d noticed within 2 minutes after paying and leaving my wallet had been taken. I ran back to the table I was sitting at and asked the person who served us where is my wallet and he said nothing so I ran over to the very front where they were serving drinks begging for my wallet back knowing it had been swiped after I had paid. They gave it back to me after realising I wasn’t stupid and knew what they’d done. They even asked me to spell out my name playing stupid. £130 cash lost thankfully there wasn’t more in my wallet at the time. Be very careful! They have this all planned. Still awaiting to get a refund for the bottle of water.

Stop Scam

A gang falls for defrauding thousands of elderly tourists in Tenerife

The National Police detains 21 men for 'squeezing' the cards of the victims when they returned to their countries. Agents block 42 properties and 300 bank accounts.

Thirty-somethings unscrupulous to live among luxuries and false glamour, of Hindu family origin, born in Tenerife and without any empathy for elderly people who seek rest on the Island. In what they believe is the tourist jungle, anything goes to be richer and more powerful than the neighbour, the person next door or other members of the same community.

Faced with this reality, the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of the National Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife dismantled a criminal organization for massive scams against thousands of older foreign tourists in the south of the Island after a complex investigation.

The Delhi operation consisted of a macro device in which more than 100 agents from various units of said security body and the Deputy Directorate of Customs Surveillance intervened. The intervention was carried out last Monday, June 5, in the municipalities of Arona and Adeje.

There were 21 detainees, including the main leaders of the gang; Six addresses were registered, a tax consultancy, a commercial premises not open to the public and 11 bazaars, which were sealed by the judicial authority. Five of the houses are in the Fañabé area (Adeje) and the sixth in the Las Viñas complex (Las Américas, Arona). The place not open to the public was in Parque Europe, in front of the Villa Cortés hotel, in Playa de las Américas as well.

The judge decreed provisional detention for the five main members of the criminal group. The agents intervened 1,300,000 euros in cash, high-value jewelry and eleven high-end vehicles, such as Mercedes and Porsche. In addition, they blocked 42 real estate properties and more than 300 bank accounts. And they seized numerous electronic devices (TPV), computer equipment and various paper documentation.

The Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife received several complaints for scams that had the same characteristics. The victims were foreign tourists over the age of 70, who said they had been scammed, after detecting fraudulent charges made in their accounts in bazaars in the south of Tenerife that were run by citizens from India. And they began to investigate, with the collaboration of the Combined Customs Surveillance Unit of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and other units of the Judicial Police, such as the Organized Crime Group (Udyco). And of their advances they notified the National Central Unit of Europol.

The professionals of the Customs Surveillance Service confirmed that the leaders of the organization had a great wealth and were owners of several companies, in the name of which there were numerous real estate properties.

The investigation began in November 2022

The investigation began in November of last year. Older tourists were recruited on public roads under the pretext of selling them some electronic device. The group was perfectly structured and there were several levels of participation. In the first were the ringleaders, who were dedicated to introducing illegally obtained money into the legal channel. They were also in charge of completing fraudulent charges on the cards and controlling the personnel of the lower scales.

Then there were the so-called first-level consorts: analyzers and sellers who made the "second sales", that is, the illegal charges on the cards through dataphones that moved through various businesses under their control. And in third place were the second-level consorts or helicopters, as they were known to the gang, who recruited the right tourists to achieve their goal and made their "first sales" to them. They also followed up those affected to the airport to make sure they returned to their countries of origin and thus minimized the risk that they would detect the scam in Spain and report it. In this last group there was a retired national police officer who was arrested, as he was in charge of acting as a driver and doing follow-ups to the Tenerife South terminal. This former agent, known as P., worked for many years at the South Tenerife Police Station.

Outside several stores in Las Américas, the leaders placed several victim recruiters, who offered electronic products at a very good price. If they showed interest, they were taken to the shops, where they were offered tea or coffee to win their trust. At that time they took information from them, such as the hotel where they were staying and the most important fact: what day they returned to their country.

Based on the profile of those affected, the ringleaders sent a "first-rate consort" to that business, who offered older people to install various applications on the devices they just bought, supposedly to watch sports in all countries of the world or have free wifi anywhere. And the electronic product remained in the hands of the sellers. The objective of this strategy was to make an appointment with the injured parties the same day they left Tenerife to then deliver the effect they had acquired.

From that moment on, improper charges were made on the cards; that is, the key process of the scam. And, with the excuse of justifying the sales before Customs, they made them sign some papers to supposedly try to validate the fraud in the face of a possible claim from the card providers to the banks. When those affected realized the deception, they were already in their country and it was more difficult for them to report to the Spanish police.

Crimes

The 21 detainees are accused of belonging to a criminal organization, money laundering and fraud. In any case, agents plan to make more arrests. After the group was dismantled by the UDEF, in collaboration with Customs Surveillance, the time has come to analyze how money laundering has been carried out, through the movements of the more than 300 blocked bank accounts and the study of the information existing in mobile phones, computer devices and the paper documentation seized.

IN SEARCH OF NEW VICTIMS

The National Police is taking steps to try to locate new victims of the plot, with the aim of offering them the possibility of reporting and better understanding the scope of the massive fraud against the elderly. To this end, information channels are established through the International Cooperation Division and the Ministry of the Interior of India. The investigation of the Delhi operation has been carried out under the supervision of the Arona Investigating Court number 2, whose head is Nayra C. Pérez, as well as the inspection of the prosecutor Sandra María Fagil. According to the sources consulted, part of the Hindu community in Tenerife has collaborated with the investigators, since they consider that the behavior of the now accused is very negative for commercial and tourist activity, in general, in the south of Tenerife.

The amounts fraudulently collected from victims vary widely. A total of 40,000 euros was taken from one of those affected from his bank account. The complaints of the injured parties reached several courts in the Arona party. So far, the judicial body dealing with the matter has received numerous letters rogatory from various countries, which until now had not been able to be attended to, since the investigation was under summary secrecy. From now on, such requests can be met. In addition to being of an advanced age, another of the requirements that the scammers sought is that the victims speak English, which is the language that the defendants speak. Those involved displayed a high lifestyle and great ostentation on their social networks. To avoid leaving a trace, another tactic of the gang was to change venues very frequently. In addition, the victim was captured in a store, the scam was committed in another and a third establishment appeared on the invoice. Some of the workers implicated in the case were brought from India and later returned to that country.

I was watching ITV This Morning today and an elderly lady had been scammed for £2200 in Spain, exactly the same way as my wife in Costa Adeje over 12 months ago. My wife put her card in machine believing she was paying £23 and they took £1,700. He was holding the machine and covered his eyes and said don't worry I'm not looking. She never got a receipt but unfortunately when trying to get our money back they produced a card machine receipt and a phoney receipt for items she had not purchased both with her signature on them.
I keep coming back to this website every now and then to read the comments and also wonder how many more people have been ripped off that nobody knows about.

Scammers Being Caught
by: Anonymous

With reference to above I've just telephoned the British Consulate in Tenerife to verify if above was true. The person I spoke to said he had no knowledge of scams or scammers being caught and with regards to them helping to get your money back, it's not something they deal with.

Scammers Being Caught

As previously stated, contacted British Embassy and not something they get involved with. Tried ringing National Police got through once but no English spoken. Tried English phone number numerous times without success. If anyone has any useful contact numbers or emails to people dealing with investigation into scammers please post on this site.

Scam
by: Anonymous

Went to Playa de Las Americas Tenerife last year. I was stopped outside a shop called Sunrise Cash and Carry. The man (Asian) asked me about a leaflet. He took us into his shop and we bought a tablet 125 euro cash. He said come back next day as we have to set it up he said you will only be here 30 mins. They kept us there 2 hrs three Asian men involved they conned me into an HDD which could be used on the tablet then conned me into using my direct debit card saying they took 3775 pound from my card. The bank won't give me my money back. I am 78. Keep away from this shop.

Carolyn, I've done a quick Internet search and there's been an update from Tenerife police, in which they give an email address to contact them regarding recovery of your money:

Re Scam
by: John

Wife and l fell for the same scam. I filled out a report to the police a few months ago and asked to be notified. Never even had an acknowledgment albeit there was a section asking if l wanted to be notified. Banks not interested. I’m putting it to Financial Ombudsman and if no luck to the small claims. Heading to the airport the bank sent a text asking if we made a payment of £2.5K
to which we said no. They ring-fenced the money then paid it a couple of days later. What was the sense in asking? The people are very clever scum.

Scammers Still At Large
by: DT

I thought the police were supposed to have rounded up the scammers. It’s a small island, all the scammers operate from electrical stores mainly in the south of the island. I did a tour of electrical shops in December 2022 and ALL were involved in some kind of tablet scam. Until holiday companies and hotels warn tourists of what’s going on, the scams will continue.

Flamingo Beach Mate Hotel SCAM
by: Lesley

My partner and myself bought a package deal in the Flamingo Beach Mate. It was an offer of 5 weeks holiday for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children) in one bedroom apartment. The first week was at the Flamingo Beach hotel then 4 weeks to be booked though booking@avactioninthesun.com. When we tried to book the next 2 weeks, got in touch and, guess what, not one holiday can be booked for 2024. We paid over £4000 by bank transfer. This is a scam and nobody is willing to help us recover the money. Just a big thumbs up to anybody who gets scratch card and then taken to the Flamingo Beach Mate DO NOT BUY the deal. You will get the first week and nothing else. £4000 is a lot of money just for a week's holiday and your flights on top.

Passarella Centre

Beware a scammer saying he's from Johannesburg, just arrived and if I knew of a bank to exchange. He showed a 100 randela note hoping I would exchange for US dollars.
I'd seen a similar scam recently so just acted dumb 🙄 (not very hard for me 😆), but be on your guard there and other malls or centres.

Have the Scammers Gone?
by: DT

I travel to Tenerife every year in December. In 2021 I lost a lot of money to scams around the marina in Costa Adeje. Initially the bank refunded my money and then 6 months later paid the scammers based on a forged invoice.
In 2022, I returned to the scene of the crime. The shop had gone and was now a restaurant. However, the scams were still going on at many gift shop/general retailers.
I am currently in Tenerife and again have visited the scene of the crime. What a difference. Never was I once approached to buy a tablet computer with incredible software. It was a pleasure to stroll in and out of the shops. There seemed to be changes of ownership.
It was reported that the criminal gang behind the scams had been arrested earlier this year. Let’s hope they are locked up for a long time.

Scammers Being Caught
by: Webby

Hello DT and all.
Our story is similar to DT. My wife was scammed in march 2022. We went to Costa Adeje in May 2023 and the shop where we were scammed was still active. Same person stood on pavement under umbrella making polite conversation to get you into the shop and then you were instantly met by another guy with a Samsung tablet for 49 euros and the tale goes on and on. The shop is on the seafront promenade just before you go down the slope towards Playa del Bobo.
We were back in Costa Adeje from 9th to 20th December. The shop is now closed with a National Police prohibition notice on the shutter door. I went to the visitor information office to enquire if there was any chance of claiming money back from funds seized from scammers and the lady gave me the same email address as stated by John on the 17 August on this website. I sent an email whilst in Costa Adeje to say we had been scammed and I had all the information with me. They replied on the day before we were due to come home to say it was necessary to go to the police station in Santa Cruz to make a statement and then after a future trial we may be able to claim our money back.
I'm sorry but I wasn't prepared to waste another day of our holiday plus up to 80 - 100 euros in bus and taxi fares on a maybe on top of what we've lost already not to mention the worry and stress of it all.
I keep coming back to this website in the hope that someone does get some compensation from these scammers but they are so clever they would probably make you out to be in the wrong.
Good luck everyone best wishes for 2024.
Hope to be back in Tenerife next year.

Scam on Stargazing - teidestars.com
by: Sunny

We booked a stargazing tour online in www.teidestars.com. It claimed it had places for the next day and asked to pay online. It is a rip off and they do also have a whatsapp number to call to make you feel legitimate. When you contact them before making the payment, they answer your call but first they ask "Hey, once you book it (this is the catch), we'd sort out for the visit someohow" but after you pay and book they are gone forever. Don't answer the call and no refund.

The website look www.teidestars.com looks so legitimate even with a whatsapp number to call and discuss. What disgusting people they are. I don't think this website is even linked to someone Tenerife. Am just wondering how come they are able to do business so openly and who knows how many people are being scammed as I type it here.

Because Stargazing is something everyone will like to do in Tenerife and these people simply milk the tourists' hard earned money. I am going to file a complaint but not sure any action will be taken.
But at least whoever visits these pages be aware of.
