Fake Electrical Goods

by Joyce
(Scotland)

I have just come back from holidaying in Tenerife where we bought (from a shop and not a street vendor) a digital video camera. My daughter has just told us that this product is a complete fake along with all the "additional features" that were sold to us. Is there a consumer protection agency in Tenerife that we could consult?

Shop fraud and theft

by Hugh
(Northern Ireland)

I would like to know how to contact the police department in the Playa De Las Americas/Los Cristianos areas as, when I was on holiday in Adeje on the 3rd of February, 2011, I was robbed by a shop assistant who also sold me inferior goods which were not genuine. I would be obliged for your help in this matter.

I would appreciate all the help you can give me.

Thankyou.

Hugh.

Ripped Off By A Shopkeeper

by S. Thompson
(Milton Keynes)

We have just returned from holiday in Los Cristianos where we purchased a camcorder. The shopkeeper showed us a Jessops catalogue which gave the price of over a thousand pounds for this particular camera and he sold it to us at less than half the price. He then told us we would also need to buy a hard drive and upgrade the battery to get the full potential from the camera.

We have visited Jessops since getting back only to find they do not sell this camera - the catalogue was a fake. We researched the Internet and this particular camera can be bought for around £140.00 and Jessops told us the hard drive should have been no more than £30.00.

In total, we paid out 634.00 euros. Reading this back you can now see what stupid, gullible idiots we are but we had no knowledge of these cameras and are old age pensioners.

Is there anything we can do to stop this happening to other people or to get our money back. This man needs to be stopped. Even the free gift he gave us went up in smoke when we plugged it in.

Could anyone give us the web address for the cental office of the police?

Ripped off by an electrical shop

by Mr Mackenzie
(Scotland)

My wife and I have just returned from Tenerife and found it a fine place. However, we bought what we thought was a reasonable offer: a camcorder and hard-drive, whilst at the same time we were given a "free" tablet, providing we bought the hard-drive to match the tablet. We were told to pick up the goods with the appropriate paperwork, guarantees and receipts, from the manager at the shop, who "sold" the items to us, a couple of hours before our transfer to the airport. When we got there he was not to be found, claiming he was seeing an important client, via 'phone call. As a result we were forced to leave with the camcorder and tablet but no receipts, instruction books or guarantees. When we checked our bank accounts today we discovered a huge amount of money had been taken, far, far more than we had agreed on. Any help on how we can recollect the money we are due back and how to prevent this happening to other people, who are clearly being conned and ripped-off by these shops? The shop that we were "dealing" with is called "Buy & Fly" in Costa Adeje. Their name has appeared on several sites now and seems to be a growing concern, and IS putting us off visiting Tenerife.
Hear from you soon.
Regards,
Mackenzie.

Rip-off Merchant

by BSM

Firstly, let me say that I was gullible and believed I could buy something cheaper than in the UK.
However, my treatment by a shop-keeper in Playa las Americas amounted to, in my opinion, deception and fraud, if not actually theft.
I have his business card so can identify the shop.
Without going into all the gory details, what are my avenues of redress? I don't have much Spanish so the official sites are a bit meaningless to me.

This is not actually by me, but from George, from Scotland. He posted it on the Accommodation comments page, which is not really suitable. That's why I've moved it here:

Nothing new - sold crap goods by Klick and Save, given a load of lies, false promises. There must be someone we can appeal to on the island. Any information would be appreciated.

We also went to Tenerife Adeje. Got ripped off in Klick Cash And Carry D.N.I. 49945731-N C.C.Bouganville local 3WE Adeje 38660 Tenerife. We paid 318 euros for camera high definition, then we had to leave it there to have it changed to English. I was not happy the way we it was done, kept saying to my partner it's a scam. I did not want to go back, so my partner went back on the Sunday at 12pm as arranged, as I told them our flight was Sunday eve. It was not ready, he arranged to go back Tuesday,I would not go with him. Again I said it's a scam, on Tuesday he went back, I sat in a bar next door. After a while one of the guys said your husband want you. I went into the shop but they took me into a shop at the back, tried selling us a Yashica full HD video hybrid hard disc 2,485 euros each and you got a battery and USB2.0micro free. Can we have your credit card? I said I did not bring it with me. Asked my partner if he had his. They said they take us to apartment to get them. I said did not take cards to Tenerife after a lot of pressure they said I could take them home to England and pay by card when we got home they wanted me to pay as soon as banks open, 10am. I said we don't get home till 6.30am and I would not be going to bank at that time. I said maybe 2pm, on flight home it hit me that it was nearly £1000 the amount he wrote was in pounds £978, not euros. I ask my grandson what these things are worth he said about £20.00. I went to PC World and asked them - £20 to £30. What they did do and now I realise I was so stupid, they took us back to villa to see my passport. He took a photo of passport. I have had phone calls from them, I won't answer. They texted saying pay up or that amount of credit will go up. What do I do? I have no intentions of paying!

Rogue Property Renters

by Audrey Thomson
(Aberdeen, Scotland)

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a James Benson in Tenerife? He has rented out several apartments, including one to me, which do not exist. This time last year I paid a refundable deposit by international bank transfer followed by a four week rent by credit card for an apartment in The Heights Los Cristianos for this past January. At the end of November when I enquired where I would get the keys to the apartment, I was told that he had decided not to rent it to me but would send the money back that he had been paid. Fortunately we got the rental amount back from the credit card company a few weeks ago but we are still after the deposit we paid. I have sent details to my bank who may be able to look into it for me. Have seen another two people on different websites complaining that they had the same experience as I did. We were lucky that we had paid the main amount by credit card as had to book other accommodation as flights were non-refundable. Others may not have been so lucky. Please, please never book with JAMES BENSON OR RENTAL COMPANY ARONSOL. If anyone knows where this James Benson lives or works in Tenerife would be grateful for the information.

Possible Scam?

by John T
(Cumbria, UK)

I am in 'discussions' at the moment with a group who I suspect are trying to pull a scam. They are targeting people who have dealt with (and been ripped off by) Club Class timeshare. They are saying that they are taking Club Class to court and will recover a large amount of compensation from a case which is very likely to be won. They say they will only take 20% of any compensation, but that the 'procurator', who actually takes the case to court, needs a fee of around €1000. Can you tell me if there in a case pending in the Santa Cruz courts for 15th November 2016 in court number 6 at 13:20. I am pretty sure that there is not, but it is difficult to confirm.
Your help would be appreciated.
Regards,
John T.

Scam In Adeje

by Janet
(Coventry)

Had a lovely holiday at the Iberostar in Adeje.
Until we bought a tablet in Klick Cash & Carry underneath
the Hotel. We paid cash but they kept saying we need to put all sorts of things on it. The day before we were due to come home we at last got it. But Gary (that is what he called himself have found he also goes by the name Gandor Singh) said if we gave him a card he could give us a guarantee and also wanted ID. I gave him my driving licence as I never part with my passport. He then signed us up with Vodafone for Internet phone etc with my husband's credit card. When we got home I found £1274.17 was taken from my bank. My husband found £4600 was taken from his account. Still waiting to find out if banks will give us the money back. So beware of this shop and others like it in the Island. They seem to be so nice and suck you in.

Scamming Shopkeepers

by T. Nagel
(Newcastle England)

My wife and I have just returned from Tenerife having been scammed by one of these Asian shops for £2689 - we were unfortunately unaware of these 'Asian Scammers' and have since researched this issue since we returned from Tenerife. We are aged 78/70

My question: Are the police aware of this problem as web sites like TripAdvisor are awash with complaints from people who have been 'scammed' by predominately Asians and except for advising people to be aware of this issue - can you recommend an organization in Tenerife who are able to address this problem and perhaps have some redress against the shops that carry out this evil.

My wife and I do not intend to ever return to Tenerife - we love the beautiful island but you are unable to walk anywhere without someone trying to sell something. I am afraid widespread publicity of this problem will make people look elsewhere for a holiday.

We have visited Italy a number of times and never encountered this problem and therefor unless this issue is tackled at the highest level by the authorities in Tenerife - tourism will rapidly decline to your wonderful island.

Should appreciate your comments and recommendations on this issue.

Mr.T. Nagel.

Scammed in Tenerife

by Sheila and Phyllis
(Scotland)

My sister and I just returned from Los Cristianos where we had a wonderful time...that is until our last day. We went into a little tobacco shop on the beachfront, can’t remember the name, to purchase some tobacco for my nephew. The store assistant then asked my sister if she would like to buy a Google tablet for only 29 euros. After careful consideration she decided it was a good deal. In order to get a two year warranty from the store of her choice in the UK she had to pay an additional 68 euros. Total cost was now 97 euros, but could we come back later that evening as we would have to go to his other store 5 mins away to get it changed into English, and get a tax free form for the airport.

We went back to the condo and did our packing as we were leaving the next morning, and returned to the store at 8pm.
This is where it gets interesting. He took us to another store all right, but in Adeje. No name above the store, but right next door to a restaurant called the Pheasant Plucker. He dropped us off and another gentleman called Gary (of Indian, Spanish decent) so he said. We were totally pressured into purchasing a satellite TV box, and if we took it he would throw in a satellite telephone as well. We thought we had hit the jackpot, as they cost a fortune, but no we then had to pay for an had sat card which would cost us 19 euros a month for 7 years, then we would own it. However, if we paid it outright we wouldn’t incur any interest and we could use this anywhere in the world!! Sounds good right? Well, after paying him €5,928 euros, €1385 in cash the rest on two of my credit cards, we got our goods. They turned out to be an Android tablet, a cheap Alcatel Android phone and an x96 mini Android box. No satellite anything!!
Of course we didn’t realise any of that until we got home and tried to hook it all up. We had no instructions, no receipts, no proof. The cash is gone, the credit card company are filing a dispute (they said it is not fraud because I authorised the transaction).
I have no idea if we will get any of it back, but I just want everyone to know that they shouldn’t deal with any of these bandits. It is a very costly experience!
PS We are both in our seventies, it would appear they prefer to swindle older people.

Information Needed on a Scam Shop in Los Cristianos

by Don
(England)

Does anyone know the address of the Phone Care Factory on the seafront in Los Cristianos? It is an Indian shop which unfortunately sells fake tablets. They lure you to see The Boss in Playa Las Americas, sells you a reputed Google streaming service which costs £2,000+. They tell you the deposit is only accessible by Google, and will not be taken from your account for 12 months. The money was taken out within 2 days! Of course, the final transaction was a rushed affair on our last day in Tenerife, carefully orchestrated to drag out things until we had to leave for the airport. We had been given a glass of water? I think it was doped as we would never have been so gullible. The Bank is trying to not refund, saying we had given our pin number.
How can you buy anything without using the card reader? The details were obviously cloned in their card reader!

Any help would be very gratefully received. We are both in our late 70s, and cannot afford to lose this money. We have had a lot of hassle changing Bank Cards, changing passwords, etc, a real strain at our time of life.

Hope some kind soul can provide info, The guys supposed names at the shop, are Jonny, Trevor, Rikki, Bossman from Las Americas Barry.

Here's hoping, Kind regards, Don.

Does anyone know anything about these companies: We were sold credits in Travel07 by Escapeaway in 2017. Everything was fine in 2018 but last year when we got to hotel in Croatia they had not been paid by Travel07. We have been unable to contact them and appear to have disappeared. I have been unable to find out anything about them and have written to Trading Standards in Tenerife several months ago but never received a reply.
