Dia de La Hispanidad

The 12th of the month sees this festival, which is celebrated throughout the whole of Spain as a national holiday. It marks the date, in 1492, that Christopher Columbus landed on what is now San Salvador Island in the Caribbean, claiming it for the Spanish throne. The Spanish version of his name is Cristobel Colon (which is where the name "Puerto Colon", in Las Americas comes from) and, although he was born in Genoa, Italy, he was undertaking his exploratory voyages on behalf of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile.

These days, as I said, it is a national holiday, with banks and many businesses being closed

Tenerife Rock 'n' Roll Festival

Approaching the middle of October, this festival celebrating the music and fashion of the 50s takes place. It is in its 10th year and takes place over three days - the 11th to the 13th.

Each day features two acts in the evening, including, on the Thursday, a celebration in honour of Elvis Presley. On the last day (Saturday), there are events in the afternoon too, including a Hawaiian fiesta. Also featured is the burlesque performer, Evita de Vil, plus a number of DJs, helping the party atmosphere along.

It all takes place at the Hotel Panoramico Garden, in Los Realejos and further information on times and purchasing tickets can be obtained by telephoning 678 952553. You'll probably need to be able to make your enquiry in Spanish, though!

Canary Magic Festival 2012

Last year saw the inauguration of this festival and it's in its second year this month.

Fans of magic will be able to see illusionists from all over the world, including American "Sylvester the Jester", who has appeared on the American sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as well as programmes featured on the NBC and Discovery channels.

The shows are compered by Italian magician Sandro Neriti, who is now a resident of Tenerife.

The two shows take place at the Teatro Guimera on the 19th and 20th and tickets cost 15 euros. They are obtainable from the theatre either in person, or online, from its website,
