The Magic of Tenerife - issue #18 May 1st, 2012
Hi
This is your genial webmaster John with the latest Tenerife Information Centre Newsletter!
In this month's issue, we'll be taking a look at:
- Rock Coast Festival - Bruce Springsteen - A Review of 1952 - Website new pages, updates and questions since last newsletter

Rock Coast Festival
Over three days, towards the end of the month, there will be what the organisers call "an unprecedented event" - a mini festival of rock music.
Taking place in Santa Cruz, occupying a space on the "fishing dock", adjacent to the Carreteria Autovia San Andres, it will begin late and end later.
Featuring acts such as Evanescence, Iggy Pop, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins and Fatboy Slim, the intention is to raise Tenerife's profile as a rock concert venue.
It takes place from the 24th to the 26th and full details can be found on the official website. Tickets, ranging from 50 to 60 euros, can be obtained from the Spanish version of TicketMaster (www.ticketmaster.es) or the department store El Corte Ingles.

Bruce Springsteen
Yes, as part of the Spanish leg of his world tour, "The Boss" will visit the Canary Islands. Unfortunately, he's not performing in Tenerife, but neighbouring island, Gran Canaria. I thought I'd include it here for the benefit of any newsletter subscribers who are die-hard fans.
Bruce, plus the E-Street Band, will be performing in an area of Gran Canaria called Siete Palmas and the entrance fee is priced between 60 and 70 euros. The date is set at Tuesday, the 15th.
Tickets can be obtained from www.doctormusic.com, www.ticketmaster.es or www.entradas.com. Telephone bookings can be made at (+34) 902 150025.
All three Tenerife ferry companies run connections to Gran Canaria, departing from Santa Cruz.

Reviewing the Year 1952
This heading may take you a bit by surprise. It's not particularly to do with Tenerife, is it? Well, it just so happens that, this month, I'll hit the milestone of 60 years old! As I was born in 1952, I thought I'd be a bit self indulgent and do a little review on what things were like back then.
King George VI of England died and was replaced by his daughter, the 26 year old Princess Elizabeth. She was crowned queen the following year.
Winston Churchill was British Prime Minister; the American presidential election that year was won by Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Agatha Christie's play "The Mousetrap" began a run in London's West End which is still going strong today.
Ditto the American show "Today" on NBC network, now one of the longest running television series in that country.
The first passenger jet flight took place, between London and Johannesburg.
The Korean war was still raging.
As far as the cost of living was concerned, a gallon of petrol in the UK cost just over 20p; the average house price was £2,028; you could buy a new car for around £470; a loaf of bread and a pint of milk both cost around 2.5p. To send a letter, a stamp would probably set you back around 1p. These prices, as ridiculously low as they seem today, were matched by the level of the average weekly wage. It was only around £8.68!
Happy days!

P.S. Don't forget the largest firework display in Europe, in Los Realejos on the evening of the 3rd.
