The Magic of Tenerife - issue #15
February 1st, 2012

Hi

This is your genial webmaster John with the latest Tenerife Information Centre Newsletter!

In this month's issue, we'll be taking a look at:

- The Dates for Santa Cruz and Puerto de La Cruz Carnivals
- February in Tenerife
- Website new pages and questions since last newsletter

-------------------------------------------------------------------

It's Carnival Time Again!

Both the carnivals of Santa Cruz and Puerto de La Cruz take place entirely in February, this year.

The theme of the Santa Cruz carnival is "Flower Power", or "the sixties" - you get the idea?

So, dust off your flared trousers, psychadelic shirt and put some flowers in your hair!

Here are provisional dates of important parts of each carnival

Santa Cruz

Opening parade: Friday 17th
Carnival day: Sunday 19th
"Coso" Apotheosis: Tuesday 21st
Burial of the Sardine: Wednesday 22nd
Grand finale: Sunday 26th

Puerto de La Cruz

Opening parade: Saturday 18th
Matar la Culebra ("kill the snake"): Monday 20th
Veteran car rally: Tuesday 21st
Burial of the Sardine: Wednesday 22nd
High heels marathon: Friday 24th
Closing ceremony: Saturday 25th

Regarding the popular Los Cristianos carnival, the powers-that-be on Arona council always seem to want to keep the dates a secret until the last minute.

As a rule this smaller event usually waits until the big ones in the north are over, taking place the weekend after they finish.

So, there is a possibility that it'll happen either from the 2nd to the 4th or the 9th to the 11th of March - but don't quote me.

Tenerife's Climate in February

The month of February is still part of Tenerife's winter - but, as you know if you're familiar with the island, the word "winter" is a bit misleading, as it's warm all year round.

However, although it will feel slightly warmer than January, the average temperatures of the year's first two months is about the same.

February, though, has its own weather phenomena, in the sense that these meteorological features are more prevalent.

There is a high possibility that you'll encounter the calima in February. This is a dust storm borne on a blast of warm air from the Sahara. This hot wind can be very oppressive and generally coats everything with a film of sand.

There is a more than average chance of rain this month, too, although more so in the north than the south. Any precipitation could be fierce enough to be manifested as a thunderstorm, but, mercifully, any downpours in Tenerife don't last very long.

But don't panic too much! For the most part, the daytime weather should be nice and warm and sunny, with evenings perhaps requiring a cardigan.
