An Important Festival of Short Films

In October, this film festival is held in La Orotava. Hailed as one of the most important such events in the Canary Islands, its aim is to showcase the best short film (maximum 30 minutes) produced since January 2009.

Such is its prestige, it is certainly on the way to being the best film festival in the whole of Spain.

Only open to natives of Spain, the nominated films will be screened at the Teobaldo Power auditorium and will be accompanied by a photographic exhibition, to complement these examples of the art of the motion picture.

There may be a special section featuring films made in the Canary Islands, should funds allow.

The event, taking place on October 28th and 29th, will be concluded with a party.

"Storm" - a Spectacular Theatrical Extravaganza

Between the dates of October 6th and 16th, a spectacular show comes to the Teatro Guimera in Santa Cruz. Performed by the troop Cirque Imaginaire, it is called "Storm" and is the world premier of a remarkable extravaganza, combining elements of circus, theatre and gymnastics. The brainchild of renowned director and choreographer, Tony Mercer, its basic story tells of a father and daughter who have lost their mother. Their journey is told in true theatrical style and incorporates circus acts such as jugglers and trapeze artists, plus acrobats and gymnasts (some Olympic gold medal winners).

As if that wasn't enough, the production features a host of special effects - volcanoes, fire, rain and snow. Video images will be simultaneously projected on a curtain of water, accompanied by live music.

Performers are drawn from all over the world - North and South America, eastern Europe, the far East and north Africa and are the best in their individual disciplines.

It will be an assault on the senses - a "Storm", in fact.

After premiering in Tenerife, the production moves to Gran Canaria and thereafter will tour the UK, South Africa and Portugal.

Tickets can be obtained from the theatre's box office, or online at www.cajacanarias.es and cost from 18 euros.

The Fiesta de Nuestra Virgen de Los Remedios

Towards the end of October, there is the Fiesta de Nuestra Virgen de Los Remedios, held in Buenavista del Norte. The festival aims to unite different disciplines such as religion, culture and sport, but, more to the point, involves about a week of partying.

So, if you're there at the time, you'll be able to see a selection of shows and processions. There'll be a funfair complete with stalls selling such things as hot dogs and other snacks. Of course, there will be loads of live music with dancing and the drink will flow! As is usually the case in Tenerife, the whole thing will end with a huge fireworks display.

A fiesta well worth attending.
