The Los Cristianos Festival for the Fishermen
Right at the tail end of August, the Los Cristianos festival, Fiesta de Nuestra Senora del Carmen, starts getting underway. This is being included in September's newsletter, because the main part of it happens over the first weekend of this month.
Once again, the fairground comes to town, with white knuckle rides (they don't stretch to a rollercoaster, though!), dodgems, ghost train, etc. Stalls sell such things as perritos calientes - hot dogs, to you and me.
Things generally happen down by the sea and, on the Saturday, there will be such events as an "aquathlon", a "greasy pole" competition, a children's festival and, as night-time arrives, much live music and dancing.
Sunday sees the procession of Our Lady of Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen. At around 7:30pm, an image of the Virgin is carried from the church down to the sea and into the waves. Thereafter, there is the inevitable firework display, followed by more live music.
Things continue into the next day, but Sunday, September 4th is the day not to miss.

Fiesta de Las Libreas de El Palmar
During the second half of September, this "Festival of the Livery" takes place at the quaint village of El Palmar.
This picturesque location, located in the northwest, just south of Buenavista del Norte, is home to this old, traditional ceremony.
It is part of the celebration of Nuestra Senora la Virgen de la ConsolaciĆ³n and is an enactment representing the casting out of evil.
The procession runs through the streets of the village and the main protagonists consist of actors, all male, but some dressed as women. They dance along, accompanied by the sound of flutes and drums and represent the devil incarnate.
They are eventually symbolically "set alight", an effect realised by the use of firecrackers. Thus, they are effectively cleansed of evil.
It's an interesting spectacle to behold and, if you're up in the north of the island, worth trying to see.

International Beach Volleyball
Right at the end of September, starting on the 30th, is this prestigious beach volleyball competition. Known as the Continental Cup Islas Canarias, it will take place in Adeje and the event is hoping to attract top players from all over the world.
The competition lasts for three days, into October, but, as it begins in September, that's why it's included in the month's newsletter.
As an extra measure of the event's importance, it is being used as a qualifier for the London Olympics, next year.
