Wingate School - a British school in south Tenerife

I am very familiar with Wingate School! When I and my current partner were still living in Tenerife, her son was actually a pupil there and I had to attend more than one parents' evening, when my partner was visiting the UK!

The school premises are well constructed, with spacious play areas and airy classrooms.

The School was started in 1982, with just seven pupils between 5 and 6 years old. From the beginning, it was a multinational school, but with English as the main language, spoken not only in classrooms, but in the playground.

Over the years, the school has grown, adding to its age range and pupil numbers, till today, when it has over 400 students, only 66% being British.

Departments in the school range from Nursery (ages 3-5) to "sixth form" (pupils 16 years and over, being prepared for A levels and university).

Lessons draw from the British National Curriculum, but with extra emphasis on Spanish.

The traditional feel of a school is maintained, with a uniform being obligatory. As well as the usual lessons, pupils are encouraged to take part in such extracurricular activities as music and drama.

Sport plays a major part, too, featuring football, netball, rounders, volleyball, basketball and cricket.

All the staff are experienced, efficient and caring. Led by Headmaster, Mr Chris Green, who has been in that post since the school's inauguration, they provide a fully-rounded education for all the young people who enrol.

The school is in Cabo Blanco, 15 minutes' drive from Los Cristianos.
