If you like typical Canarian cuisine, served up in an idyllic setting, with the minimum of fuss and frills, then this restaurant is for you.

Aguamansa, named after the small village nearby, has been established since the start of the 1970s and is still going strong.

The menu has stood the test of time, with the same basic Canarian dishes offered over the last 40-odd years!

The eatery is also a farmhouse and families with children may be pleased to see, in an adjacent paddock area, such animals as horses, ponies, pigs and, yes, ostriches!

You find Aguamansa on the mountain road out of La Orotava - at an elevation of about 5,000 feet. It can often be quite chilly at this sort of altitude, so, on entering the restaurant, the sight of a huge open fireplace containing a roaring log fire is a pretty welcome one.

On warmer days, though, you can sit out on the spacious terrace, dining al fresco. There, you'll really be able to appreciate the stunning scenery surrounding the place.

The interior is pleasantly rustic, with stuccoed walls in that orangey-yellow colour so loved by these types of establishments. These walls are adorned with all manner of traditional artefacts, such as horse bridles.

As I said above, dishes on offer are all traditional Canarian. You could have garbanzas, or chick peas as a starter, cooked in a spicy tomato sauce and accompanied with warm crusty bread.

Aguamansa appears to like its spices, with the salmorejo sauce served with the rabbit being hot enough to blow your head off.

The restaurant bills itself as specialising in, as well as rabbit, trout, which is not surprising, as its situated right next to a trout farm! You can order your fish grilled, baked or smoked.

Meat is well represented, too and, as is often the case in these restaurants, all portions are huge.

There's a good selection of desserts, including the amusingly nicknamed "Frank Sinatra". Its Spanish name is actually "flan sin nata" - flan without cream.

Waiters are friendly and efficient, as is the speed at which your order reaches your table.

All in all, an excellent place to eat - with really reasonable prices.

As regards opening times, I have been unable to find details, but I believe it serves lunches and dinners.

To find the restaurant is quite simple. You just take the TF-21 mountain road out of La Orotava. Soon after passing through the village of Aguamansa, you'll see it on the left. There is ample parking outside.
