Power FM - a quality English radio station

Power FM is another big name in English language broadcasting in Tenerife. It started in 1995, very modestly, broadcasting only to the town of Los Gigantes and was based in the back of an electronics shop.

Two years on, the station was broadcasting to the entire south coast of Tenerife.

By 2001, its reach had spead to La Gomera and Gran Canaria and, a year later, included Lanzarote.

Every year since, the station has been increasing its boradcasting range and its presence in the Canary Islands.

There are currently some thirteen presenters. Many of these are also live acts performing regularly in Tenerife bars and clubs.

The station has managed to snare the inimitable comedienne, Katy Kennedy, who presents shows of "golden oldies".

Dion, who performs a live rock 'n' roll show, continues that theme with programmes containing music from the 50s and the 60s.

There is also Val Richardson, who has been compering on the island for many years and singer Rick Porter, whom I know personally, from my time in Tenerife as an entertainer.

The station now has a spin-off, called "Power Gold". This is a twenty-four hour station, featuring classic hits from over the years, plus some equally classic comedy to break up the music.

Programmes from the BBC World Service are also featured on the main station.

Broadcasting on 91.0-92.0 fm.
