Wow, that's a tough one! You'd need to establish the name of this plant. One thing you could try is to take a photo of it, then get yourself up to the Botanical Gardens in Puerto de La Cruz. See if anyone on the staff there can identify the shrub and give you the answer to your original question.

Aguayamante. Peruvian plant - fruit ripena yellow, tastes like a sweet gooseberry. Very nice with lots of mineral benefits.

I didn't think anyone would respond to this! I checked up on the plant our anonymous contributor refers to and found that he (or she) meant "aguaymanto". You can look this up on line and, hopefully, find a picture, which you can compare to the plant you've found near where you live.
