Maxims Restaurant Los Gigantes - quality French and Belgian cuisine

maxims restaurant los gigantes

In 1999, the owner of this restaurant, Denis Kets, left his native Belgium to start a new life in Tenerife. Initially working at a hotel in Las Galletas, he eventually, in 2006, started up his own business. Maxims Restaurant was born, situated in the heart of Los Gigantes.

It quickly established a reputation for fine French and Belgian cuisine, served in an ambient setting.

He then teamed up with a chef named Christina - who, after owning and running her own restaurant in Puerto Santiago, had, in fact, retired! She'd become bored with all the leisure time on her hands and readily joined Denis to become head chef of the restaurant.

In 2008, Maxims relocated to a place just out of Los Gigantes - an area called Cueva del Polvo, which is found off the main road connecting Los Gigantes with Alcala.

This new setting can now offer stunning views of the western coast of the island, including the spectacular cliffs after which Los Gigantes is named. Dining on the terrace gives you the chance to watch the sun set behind the neighbouring island of La Gomera.

The interior is very tastefully appointed, with nice, clean lines. The tables are well spaced out, too, so you don't feel too crowded.

The choice on the menu is not particularly extensive, but what it lacks in quantity, it certainly makes up for in quality.

The cuisine is French and Belgian, cooked and presented to gourmet standard.

Examples of starters on offer include salmon bisque, king prawn kebab with Pernod sauce and terrine of the sea with yoghurt sauce. Mains include filet mignon, steamed chicken in coconut curry and a sole and smoked salmon combo.

Desserts a spectacularly represented, too. Try amaretto zabaglione with pistachio ice cream.

And, if all that wasn't enough, when you order your coffee at the end, you're given a couple of complimentary Belgian chocolates!

Another complimentary offering comes as an appetizer at the start of your visit, as you peruse the menu.

To enhance your dining experience, there is piped music, of a suitably relaxing ambient nature. Every Friday and Saturday, this becomes live, with the presence of a resident pianist.

Maxims also cater for vegetarians and, for people who are watching the pennies, offer a special three course meal deal which changes from day to day.

To find this restaurant, get yourself on the coast road from either Alcala or Los Gigantes (TF-47). I know this is a bit of a vague landmark to watch for, but look out for a road junction with a small central area containing a huge tree. One of the roads leading off the main road is called Calle Barbero and the street sign is actually on the side of the restaurant!
