The English Learning Centre is a small school in the middle of Las Americas catering for children of all nationalities aged four and upwards - essentially being the equivalent of a UK primary school.
Previously the "Little People Nursery", it was taken over in 1991 by Elaine Blair, who has over twenty years' experience in the teaching of young children.
The English school curriculum is followed, with subjects such as literacy, numeracy, sport, dance, science, geography and Spanish covered.
The school is divided into two: the English Learning Centre itself and, for the younger children, the quaintly named Poppy Lane English Nursery.
All pupils must wear the school uniform, which simply consists of a blue t-shirt (available from the school office) and dark short trousers or skirt, plus sensible shoes.
They must also provide their own basic stationery items - pencil, crayons, pencil sharpener, eraser, glue stick and ruler.
The school day goes from 9am to 3:30pm, with a snack break at 11am and lunch break at 1pm. Children may bring their own food, although, for €2, the school will provide a hot, two-course meal at lunch time.
Naturally, attendance at the school incurs a fee, but payment methods are quite flexible. Parents may pay the full yearly amount, or by instalments, or per term. There are also fees for part-time students, which can be paid monthly, weekly or daily. Full details of fees can be found on the school's website (link below).
The school is found on Paseo Verode, which is a pedestrian walkway. The nearest place to approach by car is along Calle Victor Zurita Soler. The school address also contains the phrase "Planta Semisotano Oro Blanco", which means the basement of the apartment complex Oro Blanco.
To find this street from the TF-1 motorway, exit at junction 28, following the signs for TF-481/Las Americas. Follow this road, then when you come to a roundabout, take the third exit, onto Avenida Barranco del Rey. At the next roundabout, take the second exit onto Avenida Arquitecto Gomez Cuesta. You go straight on at a small roundabout, then take the first exit at the next main one. Finally, take the first turn to the right and you're on the street you want!
