Clubhouse Restaurant and Bar Tenerife - a superb entertainment venue

clubhouse restaurant and bar tenerife

After a few management changes, the Clubhouse has now once again settled down and continues to function as an excellent entertainment venue.

Tucked away in the hills a few minutes' drive out of Los Gigantes, it nestles in a countryside setting, well away from the bustle of the neighbouring town. The terrace area, due to this location, boasts amazing views of Los Gigantes and neighbouring island, La Gomera.

Managed, these days, by Sam and Nathan, it still champions totally live music and, therefore, features a regular selection of bands. But more of that later.

Apart from top class entertainment, as befits its name as restaurant and bar, the Clubhouse offers lunch and dinner sittings.

The lunch menu is decidedly lighter than that offered in the evening. Noteworthy is the fact that, as well as more familiar British-style dishes, the restaurant offers traditional Spanish/Canarian food.

Thus, you'll find such local staples as goat's cheese, Serrano ham, chorizo, morcilla (Canarian black pudding) and chicken in mojo sauce. Some meats, such as steaks, can be cooked barbecue style and others are offered, Canarian style, cooked a la plancha.

Fridays see fish night, featuring battered cod, chips and mushy peas.

Of course, come Sunday, the restaurant offers a traditional Sunday roast dinner.

I've looked at the menu on the restaurant's website and, trust me, the prices aren't all that bad!

Now we come to the entertainment, for which the Clubhouse is deservedly renowned. As I said earlier, the accent is on fully live bands.

The Traveller Blues Band

There are four members of this unique band. I don't think these are their true names! We have "Whiskey", who, as well as being lead singer, plays guitar, slide guitar, trumpet and harp (yes, honestly), "Bluegrass", who contributes more vocals, along with guitar and harmonica, "Mad Dog", on vocals and bass and, last but not least, "AK47" giving drums and other percussion a good seeing-to.

The band plays generally classic blues music from throughout the decades, but also is not averse to venturing into "rat pack" big band swing territory.

They are a regular presence at the Clubhouse.

One night a week, they change into "Gypsy Traveller", with the addition of a tuba player and Latin percussionist. Their repertoire in this incarnation is more "unplugged" versions of evergreen classics.

The Gaffers

This band consists of two folk singers and guitarists who delight lovers of this genre with a huge repertoire of traditional English and Irish folk music.

They preside over the "Folk Club" night, which occurs fortnightly, on Fridays.

Phoenix

A five-piece rock band, Phoenix are resident at the venue every Sunday afternoon. Enjoy your Sunday roast while listening to covers of rock classics by all your favourite heavy rock bands.

The Reboot Project

This outfit hosts the Tuesday afternoon jam session. Specialising in rhythm and blues, soul, Motown, jazz and funk, they're up for any other musicians getting up and joining in.

This is also when the restaurant has its "Euro Day", when, between 1pm and 6pm, all drinks and food cost just one euro!

Other acts perform through the rest of the week, to make a seven-night entertainment package.

Despite its out-of-the-way location, this venue can become very full, so if you want to be sure of a seat, it's best to phone up and reserve one.

Here's how to find this elusive venue.

You need to be on the TF-454 Tamaimo road, which can be accessed from the TF-47 coast road from Las Americas to Los Gigantes.

The Tamaimo road is climbing and winding and you should watch out for a road, off to the right, which is more like a right fork. Take this and descend onto a tiny village. Watch out for the church on your left, then turn left just past it.

You'll be on a narrow country lane and you should watch out for the Clubhouse, slightly raised up, on your right. There's no sign, but you should be able to see the umbrellas on the terrace.
